This live show featured a story from Chicago-based award-winning science fiction author, Nnedi Okorafor accompanied by live Afro-Cuban music from acclaimed Chicago musician Kahil El’Zabar, performed in an 800 seat cathedral on Michigan Avenue. LeVar told me it was “one of the most magical evenings of [my] life.”

I helped develop the Chicago live StorySLAM into the 3rd largest market in the county and the most widely attended live storytelling show in Chicago. The shows saw over 200% audience growth from one 300-capacity show to three per month for a total of nearly 1,000 audience members each month, plus at least two 1,000-capacity GrandSLAMs per year. In my time, I also heard thousands of stories and met tens of thousands of story lovers.

Code Switch is a race and culture outlet and a weekly podcast from NPR. This sold out live event (1,500 fans!) began with a moving performance from poet, author and Chicago native Eve Ewing. Hosts Gene and Shereen then welcomed WBEZ Chicago’s South Side Reporter, Natalie Moore to the stage to answer the questions the Chicago audience had about race, gender, ethnicity and how these themes play out in everyday life in the Windy City. We closed by welcoming a very special guest, comedian and writer Hari Kondabolu, who shared his experience as an Indian American working in comedy.
